We are looking for Early Years educators for our preschool in Kawagoe, Saitama.
Our approach is In The Moment Planning, where you follow the child's needs in the moment and try to find teachable moments on the fly. We try to reduce teacher-led time as much as possible and that requires quite a lot of work and motivation. From the outside, it looks like playtime, but it's actually hundreds of possible learning moments happening at once. It's a really hard method to teach for some, but effortless and natural for others.
This is a great place to work for someone who actually loves Early Years. We want someone to be the driving force in the classroom where the kids are at the centre of it. We want someone that likes to take control and responsibility of the classroom, so maybe someone that doesn't like the heavily structured or limited nature of many schools here and wishes they had more freedom to experiment, take chances and follow the needs of their children. The successful applicant will also need to be comfortable in nature as we operate a Forest School every Friday that weather allows in our own plot of land in a local protected woodland.
Many places say it, but we actually want to move the setting to be as child-led as possible. It's a mixed age setting and we are looking for a teacher to lead the upper school (4-6yrs).
It is hard work and you have to really know, or get to know what you are doing. It's great for a teacher that likes it, but hell for someone who needs a lot of structure\guidance.
We're a family run, city registered 認可外保育園 Immersion British Nursery (British curriculum). British teachers are NOT a preference or requirement but experience with EYFS\ITMP would be nice as that is the curriculum\approach we use and the successful applicant will have to become very familiar with it. What we really want is a career teacher, someone who knows the difference it makes teaching Early Years and wants to do it.
The children are here 0900-1500 (some stay late for daycare) and the teachers are usually here 0800-1600. Holiday is usually about 6 weeks per year (officially 2, but we almost always have 5 or 6).
We sometimes have events on Saturdays (around 3 per year) but always have a day off or extended holiday right before or after. We try to be as flexible as possible and ask for the same flexibility in return.
The salary starts at 250,000 for those that need a lot of support and we can afford to pay up to 350,000pm for the right person who has the right knowledge, skills, and attitude and also takes the responsibility of driving the nursery and preschool in line with our values and mission. We hope to find someone to take on full responsibility of the Early Years program.
We are a small sole proprietorship and we aren't in a position yet to offer private healthcare insurance, so everyone(including my family) are on the public health insurance. However, we do pay all other necessary insurances etc. We have started the process of becoming a Ippan-Shadan-Hojin and should be able to offer more benefits in the near future.
We are a small childcare centre, not a business and I'm not a businessman unless I'm forced to be. We really don't have much wiggle room because we try to keep class numbers and prices as low as possible, so money is always on our mind, but we get by. No big-bucks investments in the classroom, but we build it up little by little. I hope to one day build a sustainable forest school using all the lessons learned here and hopefully with a dependable team full of expertise.
There are many more aspects to this job I cannot include here without turning it into an essay so please feel free to reach out for a chat and to ask any questions.
I've attached a video I made with my son last year just to show the classroom and attitude of the school.
Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you,
Dale
